Upcoming Solo Show in SF
Opening Reception January 21st, 2012 6-9pm
on exhibit January 21-February 5 at Modern Eden Gallery
403 Francisco St. San Francisco, CA 94133
RSVP on Facebook
Modern Eden Gallery is pleased to announce “Soliloquies from the Silent Country”, new paintings and sculptures by San Jose artist Lacey Bryant. The opening reception will be held at Modern Eden on Saturday, January 21st from 6-9 pm. Live music will be provided by acclaimed Folk group “The Wild Reeds” [http://www.myspace.com/thewildreeds], and complimentary drinks by Quail Oak Winery will be served to our 21+ guests. The exhibition will be on display through February 5, 2012 and is free and open to the public.
Theatrically posed and surrounded by lush, illusory environments, the subjects of Lacey’s works are like illustrations in a picture book written in an unknown language. The images are somewhat familiar but certain elements remains foreign. Like a hazy dream of an imagined childhood long forgotten, the images strive to make you feel as if you just might have been there once, maybe. The stage is set in an imagined world of natural beauty beneath ominously stormy skies. It is a world poised between now and once upon a time.
The use of symbolism gives the work a universal language although many of the symbols can be interpreted in several different ways. Certain motifs are repeated throughout the works such as birds and insects, roots, branches or veins, string, theatre curtains and abandoned objects. Often emitting from the haunting subjects of her work, these symbols represent desires, feelings and afflictions. Lacey’s subjects are often blind to their own dilemmas or at least are unaware of how to change their circumstances. Curtains remind us that we are peering in on a world as artificial as our own. These images are invented to confront issues such as connection, longing, frailty, time and our own mortality.
As is common in Lacey’s work, there is a subtle tension between beautiful and unsettling elements. Though the settings are usually very light and airy there is a certain heaviness in the atmosphere and a distinct melancholy about the girls with wild hair and confrontational stares. We are presented with things we are uncomfortable with-spiders, holes, cracks and decay. This contrast is constructed to create a sense of mystery and mood, enticing the viewer to linger and embrace their own hidden dark sides or even to find the beauty in something that scares us.
Located in San Francisco’s historic North Beach, Modern Eden was opened in June 2010. Local artists Bradley Platz and Kim Larson are Co-Owners and Gallery Directors. Modern Eden Gallery has quickly become one of San Francisco’s most exciting and attractive destinations for art. Modern Eden showcases talent-driven art by San Francisco’s top emerging and established artists. Modern Eden focuses on figurative and illustrative paintings in genres ranging from realism to surrealism. You can visit the gallery at 403 Francisco Street Wednesday through Sunday 11 am-7 pm or anytime on-line at www.moderneden.com.

Yarnbombing the SubZEROfestival
Yesterday was rad! The yarnbombing went off splendidly, so many sneaky stitchers came out and really impressed me with their enthusiasm and wild ideas. Josh Marcotte of Lost San Jose followed us around and shot amazing photos of the siege. He had about a dozen cameras of all types, including one that had 8 lenses to take a mini stop motion movie. I’m glad he was along, I once again didn’t take any photos! We got some of those balloons up really high, so hopefully they’ll stick around awhile. I think people are going to end up breaking their necks trying to get them down, but they’ll do it anyway. I think we may try to completely cover al the rungs of a park bench sometime in the near future. Perhaps at Caesar De Chavez park…
I had a bit of a hot glue disaster as my car got so hot that it melted a lot of the glue on my cardboard house. Cherri let me run into Anno Domini and glue it back together. I’m sooo glad I brought my glue gun! People were lining up all night to stick their head in the house, so I guess they trusted me not to put something horrible in there. I put up some pictures of the house here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/evilrobot42/sets/72157624210090978/
I really wish I had thought of this earlier, Peter was saying I could have put a camera in the house to record peoples’ heads popping in and out, which would have been so funny! I’m looking forward to searching for pictures of people with their heads inside, a lot of people were snapping them. I even had some guy with a blue mohawk (and matching can of blue ribbon in one hand) manage to get his head inside. I’d really like to do this again but on a waaay grander scale (keeping the dollhouse sized scale intact, just making monster-big 8 story house amoebas).
But for now, I’m really happy to get back to oil painting. I’ve been so busy these past few months I haven’t been able to work on new paintings. I’m going to hack all of the shelving from the sketchbook show into sparkling new panels, hopefully next weekend. I’m hoping to completely rework my wall at KALEID in the next couple of months. I miss my oils so much! I even acquired some new colors second-hand recently and I’m really jazzed to start messing about with them.
Sculptures
I’m working on an installation for SubZERO (www.subzerofestival.com). I’ve been sculpting and building all weekend and I still have tons to do. Here are some pictures of the figures I’ve been making from polymer clay. I’ve made a total of 4 people for the project so far. I may make 2 or 3 more. The bulk of the project is being made from cardboard which is awesome because it is free! The knitting is still moving along as well, slowly thanks to my distracting new project (why, oh why can’t I stick to doing just one thing at a time)? I wish I had figured out what to do for my subZERO exhibit a few months ago, I only have until June 4th to figure all of this out! Still, I guess I work well under pressure, which is good because I keep creating more of it for myself. Many thanks to Cherri for helping me figure out an awesome idea for my exhibit! I’m really excited to watch people interact with it. I think it will be funny…
